Willow Basket Workshop with Helena Golden

As part of our Creative Schools initiative and Arts Council Ireland Programme, we were delighted to welcome willow basket maker Helena Golden to our school.

Helena is an experienced Irish artisan with a deep-rooted passion for basketry, nature, foraging and weaving. With years of teaching various forms of basketry and craft, she brings the essence of sustainable, eco friendly, Irish craft to your fingertips and helps children to connect with their natural environment.

Basket making

Using sustainably grown willow, learn how to weave your own basket just as your ancestors did. Baskets were used for storing and carrying food and fuel and they are becoming very popular again as we try to reduce the amount of plastic that we use.

All pupils had the chance to create their own willow basket using sustainably grown willow, learning traditional weaving skills and connecting with nature along the way. The pupils loved making a sustainable product that can be used in countless ways!

A BIG THANK YOU also to the parents who joined us for this wonderful workshop.
